What is the theatre mask called? ›

In a historical sense, there are two names for each mask. The name Melpomene represents the tragedy mask or Muse of Tragedy and the name Thalia represents the comedy mask or Muse of Comedy. Melpo is the shorter name for Melpomene, meaning a celebration of dance and song.

These masks, a symbol of opposing themes in literature, theater, and song, come from two of the Greek Muses, Melpomene and Thalia. Melpomene is the Muse of Tragedy, thus the sad face on one mask, while Thalia is the Muse of Comedy, represented by the smiling face.

The Apple Watch's Theater Mode (also called Cinema Mode) is found in the Control Center, which is just a swipe away. It looks like the iconic symbol for acting – two masks, one happy and one sad. Tapping this icon will toggle this special setting that prevents sounds and keeps the display dark.
